Sartorial exhibitions and
wedding
dresses have become fashionable in recent years, with
shows such as "Poiret: King of Fashion" at the Metropolitan Museum of
Art and "American Beauty" at the Fashion
designer
wedding dresses Institute of Technology among
the more popular. Now London's Victoria and Albert Museum is bringing
"The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947-1957" to Nashville.
The show, which broke attendance records at the V&A, will be hosted
at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the exhibition's only U.S.

Through stunning garments and
accessories, as well as video, photographs
and fashion dolls, "The Golden Age of Couture" seeks to put postwar
fashion into sociological and historic context. It follows the
rebuilding of the French and English couture industries in the years
following World War II, and compares and contrasts the two fashion
centers—Paris with its emphasis on exquisite fabric and delicate
stitching,it is very easy to find a fabric like
evening
dresses; London with its tradition of finely tailored suits and
innovative solutions to rationed materials.
The exhibition is
anchored around the aesthetic that emerged during the
late 1940s and '50s that reflected a new optimism, particularly as
envisioned by Christian Dior. Mr. Dior's "New Look"—so-named by Harper's
Bazaar editor Carmel Snow—featured cinched waistlines, sloping
shoulders and full-bodied skirts in contrast to the boxy shoulders and
otherwise military-inspired fashions of the war years. She like dress as

was in, as women returned to corsets and other architectural
undergarments that Coco Chanel and the flappers had discarded in the
'20s.
